FAQs for Upgrading Your Piano

By Brittany Brugman

As we evolve as pianists and advance in life, we deserve to reward ourselves for each accomplished milestone. If you are like me, you have progressed through multiple pianos with a “dream piano” on your acquisition wish list. At each stage and age, our piano associates are here to educate and guide you to make the best informed decision for you and your family. For your reference, I have compiled a list of frequently asked questions, (FAQs) to help you identify when to upgrade, why upgrade, who benefits from upgrading, and perks from upgrading.

FAQs:

Q: When should you upgrade? A: Knowing when to upgrade will depend on your piano’s condition, how much you want to invest, and how you want to use the piano. The most common reason for advancing to a new instrument occurs based on a piano’s condition. For instance, does your piano make a distinct buzzing sound or no longer hold its tune? If you answered “yes” to one or both of the aforementioned, you should consider investing in a new piano. Chances are the soundboard is cracked, which is costly to replace. In this case, it is more cost effective and advantageous for you to purchase a new piano with a clean slate and a longer lifespan.

Q: Why should you upgrade? A: Understandably, most parents purchase keyboards or used pianos in the beginning stages for their children as they want to see if they will “take” to the instrument. After a few years of enjoying and growing with the piano, teachers and parents realize that an upgrade is essential for the child’s development. For instance, if the student has a keyboard, consider upgrading to a studio vertical. Or if the student has a studio vertical, consider upgrading to a grand piano. As you step up to a better instrument, you will hear and feel the differences and develop an attuned ear and improved technique at each level.

Q: Are there benefits for upgrading? A: Yes! We offer trade-in value for previously purchased new pianos from us to apply towards future piano purchases. The only requirement is that you invest within 5 years (Yamaha) or 10 years (Steinway) for twice the amount you previously purchased. (For example, an $8000 investment will be applied to a $16,000+ value piano.)

Q: Who should upgrade? A: Anyone seeking a better quality instrument to play on or listen to! Whether you seek to play professionally or for fun, we have options for everyone! Also, we do have resources to help you achieve your goals, and are here to assist at every age, stage, and upgrade!
