Van Cliburn Steinway at West Music

Van Cliburn Steinway at West Music

Van Cliburn Steinway at West Music

West Music is proud to announce the regional tour to showcase the personal Steinway & Sons grand piano of one of classical music’s most revered artists, Van Cliburn, which will include several locations in Iowa and Illinois. The stunning Model D, Serial #443530, was a personal favorite of Cliburn’s, and accompanied him to the great stages of the world for some of his most memorable performances.

Cliburn’s piano was completed in 1976 at the Steinway & Sons factory in Astoria, New York. It was selected into Steinway’s famed Concert & Artist piano inventory, where it received its new moniker: CD 375. It quickly became a favorite of Cliburn’s, and he purchased it for his own collection at the first opportunity. Although Van Cliburn owned many Steinway pianos, this one was played by him as much or more than any in his collection over the years.

See (and play!) this amazing one-of-a-kind instrument for yourself at a West Music location near you.

Come in to your local West Music store and hear for yourself the quality and craftsmanship of the Boston and Essex pianos.

Designed by Steinway, these pianos are built using the techniques and expertise developed over 160 years of building the finest pianos in the world – the instruments the finest artists insist upon.

Boston Piano LogoThe Boston Performance Edition features improvements in materials, specifications, and performance never before seen in the mid-price range. The Boston piano features a duplex scale, adapted from the famous Steinway & Sons design, which adds a harmonic richness that simply can’t be duplicated by other instruments in a similar price range. In comparison to other pianos, the Boston has less string tension. This reduced string tension allows for a larger, tapered soundboard, creating longer sustain, and more singing quality in the tone. A maple inner rim, found in only the finest pianos, increases structural integrity and improves the tone by isolating the soundboard. These and other nuances set Boston apart apart from imitators.

EssexThe Steinway-designed Essex piano incorporates the latest design specifications and engineering standards from Steinway & Sons. In keeping with Steinway’s commitment to excellence, Steinway & Sons provides technical assistance for the production of Essex pianos, to insure that Essex pianos are made to the specifications established by Steinway. And every Essex instrument is inspected by a team of highly experienced Steinway & Sons trained technicians before it leaves the factory. Due to the Steinway-designed Rim Shape, Essex grand pianos are wider at the tail than most other pianos of the same length. This allows for a larger soundboard area, producing a richer sound. Essex pianos have a Steinway-designed, all wood (no plastic) action for proven durability and heightened responsiveness and control.

Monmouth College Receives Generous Gift of $80,000 for A New Steinway Concert Grand Piano

The Monmouth College music department will start the coming academic year on a good note—literally—thanks to the gift of a new Steinway concert grand piano by 1947 graduate Joyce Busby of Litchfield, Ill.

The instrument, which is valued at approximately $80,000, will arrive by the beginning of September, according to associate professor of music Ian Moschenross. It will be formally dedicated at a Sept. 22 piano recital by Moschenross.

Moschenross said that thanks to the gift, he and department colleague Tim Pahel are looking forward to traveling to New York City in August. “Steinway sends you to their factory in Queens,” he explained, “and you tour the factory and see pianos being made.”

Moschenross had the opportunity to meet Busby earlier this month and express his gratitude for the gift, which Busby made in honor of her parents, Leland and Ruth Busby. Her father attended Monmouth during the 1921-22 academic year.

“I have an abiding interest in good music,” she said. “That’s why I wanted to make a gift to Monmouth College along those lines.”
