Feeling Overstrung?

Feeling Overstrung?

Steinway Piano Overstrung

When Heinrich Engelhardt Steinway came to New York City in the 1850’s, the piano was a well established instrument. The British called the piano a Piano Forte and the Europeans, a Forte Piano which means loud-soft. Prior to this, the harpsichord was the instrument of choice but it was played at one volume only. At this time, Steinway built their square grand pianos like everyone else which was parallel strung—strings running perpendicular to the keys and parallel to each other.

In 1855, Steinway produced the first overstrung piano where the bass strings are strung over the treble strings which made it possible to use longer strings. This allowed the moving of the bridge into the center of the soundboard for more volume and a clearer, more powerful bass sound.

The sound was rich and revolutionary. It was awarded a gold medal at New York’s Industrial Fair. On December 20, 1859, Steinway patented #26532—Grand Overstringing. This overstringing design coupled with a single cast-iron plate changed the look of the grand piano (from a square grand to the look it has today) and led Steinway to be generally recognized as building the first modern concert grand.

It may be one of the reasons why Thomas A. Edison wrote to Steinway on June 2, 1890, “I have decided to keep your grand piano. For some reason unknown to me, it gives better results than any so far tried.”

Van Cliburn Steinway at West Music

Van Cliburn Steinway at West Music

Van Cliburn Steinway at West Music

West Music is proud to announce the regional tour to showcase the personal Steinway & Sons grand piano of one of classical music’s most revered artists, Van Cliburn, which will include several locations in Iowa and Illinois. The stunning Model D, Serial #443530, was a personal favorite of Cliburn’s, and accompanied him to the great stages of the world for some of his most memorable performances.

Cliburn’s piano was completed in 1976 at the Steinway & Sons factory in Astoria, New York. It was selected into Steinway’s famed Concert & Artist piano inventory, where it received its new moniker: CD 375. It quickly became a favorite of Cliburn’s, and he purchased it for his own collection at the first opportunity. Although Van Cliburn owned many Steinway pianos, this one was played by him as much or more than any in his collection over the years.

See (and play!) this amazing one-of-a-kind instrument for yourself at a West Music location near you.

bring you a rare opportunity!

Yamaha Grand Pianos from Von Maur

Chances are, you have shopped at your local Von Maur store and enjoyed the live piano music drifting through the air as you browse for a new pair of shoes or slacks. Through a partnership with Yamaha and West Music, Von Maur has placed Yamaha grand pianos in their stores to add an upscale ambiance to their guests’ experience.

At certain intervals, these pianos are exchanged for new, which is where your opportunity comes into play. The pianos which are exchanged out are brought to West Music where we adjust, tune, buff and shine to put them in like-new condition, offering them for purchase at an amazing price. These grand pianos have been well cared for by the Von Maur stores and regularly tuned, so the break-in process is complete – plus each instrument still retains the full 10 year Yamaha warranty! You are able to invest in a nearly new, fully warranted piano for the price of a used model! Many times these instruments are spoken for even before we have them back in our stores!

For information on the pianos that are currently available, or on pianos that we expect to be arriving soon, please use our contact form, or call West Music at (800) 373-2000.
